New job, new workstation

I have left my old position at the Linnaeus University, that means I lost my workstation. I used to have a 15" Macbook Pro Retina, upgraded with max RAM and 512 GB disk. My new job (backend sys tech at CLX Networks) gave me a new work Mac, but it was only 13" Retina (which is crap for gaming) and to the honest, it was time to completely separate work from private. I needed a new workstation.

The new machine

The choice was between a PC and a Mac. I took some time to think about this, but in the end i decided I wanted a Mac. Now, I really only had three options, considering I wanted some gaming to happen on this machine; a Macbook Pro, an iMac or a Mac Pro. I ruled the Macbook Pro out pretty quickly, not enough bang for the buck considering I already had my work Macbook when I needed mobility. iMac or Mac Pro? I went for the Mac Pro, although a used one.

I went with a Mac Pro 2009 with 2x4 core 2,26 GHz Xeon and 12 GB RAM (might upgrade this). The spinning hard drive was replaced with a 500 GB Samsung SSD. The last thing in the need for an upgrade was the graphics card. The machine came with a Radeon 4800 512 MB. Clearly, this was a bit too slow for me. I got a really good deal on a GeForce 970 which works like a charm, except that it can not display the boot screen since it is a PC card.

Final thoughts

I have not regreted my descision for a second. The machine is fast and snappy, plus I can upgrade RAM, CPU, disk and graphics if needed. Sure, it is not a new machine, but it gets things done and it does it well.
